Do Different Generations Really Want to Collaborate to Improve the World? A nationally representative survey suggests, emphatically, yes. Cal J. Halvorsen, PhD, MSW, is an assistant professor at the Boston College School of Social Work, an affiliate of the Center on Aging & Work at Boston College, and a Senior Research Fellow at CoGenerate (the new name for Encore.org). His work examines aging societies, intergenerational initiatives, and the need and desire for people past midlife to work past traditional retirement age, with particular emphasis on self-employment, entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, and encore careers. His research has been funded by both public and private sources, including the U.S. Social Security Administration, AmeriCorps, Boston College, Encore.org, and the Hope Foundation. For Newton at Home, Cal Halvorsen will talk about the results and implications from the nationally representative March 2022 Cogeneration survey of 1,549 respondents living in the U.S. aged 18 to 94. CoGenerate commissioned NORC at the University of Chicago to find out what Americans think about cogeneration — a strategy to bring older and younger people together to solve problems and bridge divides. Cal served as an advisor on this study. To learn more, check out this December 13, 2022 article on the PBS Next Avenue website.
