    COMMUNITY FORUMS

Newton at Home sponsors citywide meetings focused on topics of interest to people who wish to stay in Newton as they age. At each of these events we also provide an update on recent achievements and the progress we are making towards launching Newton at Home.

In 2009 we held two community forums.

    • The first focused on two emerging topics in medicine: the role of the hospitalist and the emergence of hospital-based specialty medical practices providing health care services aimed at helping people remain in their homes as they age.
    • The second explained the history and current status of the fast-growing and revolutionary national movement of "villages" designed to make it easier for people to age in their community. There are now approximately 50 open villages across the United States.

In May 2010 we sponsored a community forum on housing that addressed how and when to adapt housing to accommodate changing needs and the City of Newton's proposed legislation to make it easier to add an accessory apartment to an existing home.

In June 2010, we hosted Judy Willett, a Newton resident and Executive Director of Beacon Hill Village, who told us about the fast-growing, national aging-in-community movement and the fifty plus Villages which have already opened across the US.

Our next forum will be in September 2010. Here are topics that NAH is considering for future community forums:

    • Discussions with City of Newton elected officials on the city's plans and initiatives relating to seniors
    • The nationwide aging–in–place movement—what's happening across the country and how the movement's best ideas might be applied to Newton
    • The new scientific findings on aging research
If you would like to recommend a topic that you believe would be of significant interest to Newton residents
who are over 60, please send your ideas to events@newtonathome.org.

You are encouraged to bring your friends and neighbors. Parking is available on site.
